Your interviews are then about personal suitability – instead of having to work out if they can do the job.

It’s likely that you’ve always enjoyed practical work – a ‘hands-on’ person. Usually, the trial of reading reference books and manuals is something you’ll force on yourself if you absolutely have to, but you’d hate it. A safer solution is the provision of CD and DVD ROM materials which don’t suffer from these broadband issues.

A ridiculously large number of organisations are all about the certification, and completely miss what it’s all actually about – which is of course employment. Always start with the end in mind – don’t make the vehicle more important than the destination.

It’s common, for instance, to obtain tremendous satisfaction from a year of studying and then find yourself trapped for decades in a career that does nothing for you, as an upshot of not doing some decent due-diligence at the beginning.

It’s essential to keep your focus on where you want to go, and build your study action-plan from that – not the other way round. Keep your eyes on your goals and study for a job you’ll still be enjoying many years from now.

Look for advice and guidance from an experienced advisor, even if you have to pay – it’s considerably cheaper and safer to investigate at the start if a chosen track will suit, rather than find out after two full years that the job you’ve chosen is not for you and now need to go back to square one.

Computer and network support staff are more and more sought after in Great Britain, as organisations are becoming more reliant on their technical advice and fixing and repairing abilities. An area that’s often missed by new students weighing up a particular programme is the concept of ‘training segmentation’. This basically means how the program is broken down into parts for timed release to you, which completely controls the point you end up at.

Trainees may consider it sensible (with training often lasting 2 or 3 years to achieve full certification,) for a training company to release the courseware in stages, as you achieve each exam pass. However:

What if you find the order offered by the provider doesn’t suit. You may find it a stretch to finalise all the sections at the speed required?

In an ideal situation, you want ALL the study materials up-front – enabling you to have them all to come back to in the future – as and when you want. This allows a variation in the order that you complete each objective if you find another route more intuitive.

Only consider training programs which will move onto commercially acknowledged exams. There’s an endless list of minor schools proposing ‘in-house’ certificates that are essentially useless when you start your job-search.

If the accreditation doesn’t feature a major player like Microsoft, CompTIA, Adobe or Cisco, then you may discover it could have been a waste of time and effort – as no-one will have heard of it.

Remember: a training program or the accreditation is not the ultimate goal; the particular job that you want to end up in is. Many trainers unfortunately place too much importance on just the training course.

You may train for one year and then end up doing a job for a lifetime. Don’t make the mistake of taking what may be an ‘interesting’ training program only to waste your life away with a job you don’t like!

Set targets for how much you want to earn and the level of your ambition. This can often control which qualifications you’ll need to attain and what’ll be expected of you in your new role.

Look for help from an experienced industry professional that ‘gets’ the commercial realities of the area you’re interested in, and who can offer ‘A typical day in the life of’ outline of what you’ll actually be doing with each working day. It just makes sense to discover if this is the right course of action for you well before your course begins. There’s really no reason in starting to train and then find you’ve gone the wrong way entirely.

We’d all like to believe that our jobs will remain secure and the future is protected, however, the truth for most sectors throughout Great Britain currently is that there is no security anymore.

It’s possible though to hit upon security at market-level, by looking for high demand areas, tied with work-skill shortages.

The IT skills-gap throughout the United Kingdom falls in at approximately 26 percent, as shown by a recent e-Skills analysis. Or, to put it differently, this means that the UK is only able to source 3 trained people for every four jobs that are available at the moment.

Acquiring in-depth commercial computing qualification is as a result an effective route to succeed in a long-term and pleasing livelihood.

It’s unlikely if a better time or market circumstances is ever likely to exist for getting certified in this rapidly expanding and evolving market.
